Through Bore Encoder
A robotics encoder designed around easier mounting and absolute positioning support.
Overview
I had used similar through-bore encoder products as a student, but kept running into the same frictions: inconvenient mounting patterns and lack of absolute positioning support. I set out to make my own version to solve those issues for FTC-style robots.
Prototype and fit testing
The first prototype focused on proving the mechanical form factor and working through the manufacturing details that matter on a real robot.
- Designed around easier attachment to common robot build systems
- Tested prototype housing materials including resin and SLS nylon
- Tuning tolerances and the self-locating tapered closure design
Batch production
After the prototype pass, the product was listed for sale.
- Prepared the design for small-batch manufacture
Final product
The final product packaged the mounting, absolute positioning, electronics, and documentation into a customer-ready encoder.
- Marketing of the product to teams online
- Created technical documentation for customer integration
